hi, if i drop in an image file, with a white background, how can i remove this....ie my logo is red and blue on white background, but i just want the red and blue - NO WHITE !

I would suggest going to Best Buy, Office max, even Walmart I think and buy you a copy PhotoShop Essentials. It's less than $50 most places and you can use it to turn your logo into a png file which has a clear back ground. You can select the white parts and just delete then before you save the file. If it's just a one time deal, upload it to something like PhotoBucket and give me the link and I'll do it for you.

Another option is to use this chroma key effect. This effect can make any colour transparent:

But if you own Photoshop or another paint application that can create transparent PNG, TGA or BMP files I would go for BillyJack's solution.

What about the FREE Open Source Program GIMP. Its perfect for all bitmap images and transparency operations as well.

thanks all, i have used the chromakey way andit works "ok" bit patchy round the edges etc, but fine for now...i have PS CS3, but cannot save as BMP or Targa for some reason now? (i used ot be able to in past!)

The latest version of Microsoft Powerpoint has a very good "Remove Background" feature that you can use on imported images.

Then you can right-mouse-click on the image and choose "Save as picture" to export it back out.
