It's interesting to realize that a glowing layer can be used as an alternative to a light layer. Simply mark the GLOW checkbox in the LAYER > ACTIVE LAYER PROPERTIES... dialog.
In this screenshot, the holes of the text look like abstract lanterns. (select the HOLES text layer style with its 3rd dropdown)
