I searched the documentation and I have been unable to find a key or key sequence to allow a "typeover" mode when editing text layers.
As I use various show files to generate several individual video files (such as for music credits - 1 title per song) having a "typeover" mode would save time and be very helpful for this as well as when editing templates.

How about his:
-choose FILE > NEW SHOW
-change the text to 12345678
-set the 1st dropdown below the textbox to FIXED SPACE
-choose LAYER > CLONE ACTIVE LAYER
-change the text to 87654321
-animate the WRITER prop of the 1st text layer from (1,0) to (1,1)
-animate the WRITER prop of the 2nd text layer from (0,0) to (1,0)

Thank you for the quick response.
Apparently, I did not phrase my question properly/clearly.
I was hoping that adding a keyboard function for the insert key (for example) to initiate a typeover mode to be used when EDITING/CHANGING the text contents of a text layer, as used in word processors or notepad for example, would be possible and not entail a great deal of work/coding.

Being able to store text per key does not say anything about the transition effect. That would require a new dropdown similar to the current physics/tweening dropdown that is used to transition numerical values:

Realize that by using 2 text layers you have full control. You can be super creative in designing your own text transition effects!

michiel, i don't understand, can you explain with an example the problem with transition?

A text transition is an animation from a text to another text. This can be done in infinite ways. So this dropdown that describes the way you go from text 1 at key 1 to text 2 at key 2 is going to be a VERY big dropdown.
It's more practical to use 2 text layers and design this transition yourself, for example by performing the few steps I described in my 1st comment on this page.
But maybe I am wrong and you want to select preset "typeover" instead.

Michiel, i was just thinking about a textbox content that we can change along the timeline. That is why I was thinking about storing the text on the key itself whenever it is modified.
I was thinking about Physics for size/position/rotations I hadn't thought about that regarding the text change.
I would be delighted to test a preset TYPEOVER I have no preconceived notions.
