Just recently got Bluff Titler and loving it - especially all of your work on the site - truly inspirational and a bit frightening!
I have tried to export some sequences with the 'transparency' box checked but when I take them into the editing software I use - Cyberlink's PowerDirector - the background is still there. Is that a problem with the Power Director or my total lack of knowledge about how all these different types of file work?

An easy way to test the alpha channel is to import the exported video back into BluffTitler.

Choose LAYER > ADD LAYER > ADD VIDEO LAYER to import the video.

A plasma layer can be used as the background that must be visible through the transparent parts of the video.

Choose LAYER > ADD LAYER > ADD PLASMA LAYER to add a plasma layer.

Here's another way to check the alpha channel:

Wanting to use some overlays in vegas but for the life of me can't figure out how to get to save the avi. with a transparent background. Was trying the lower 3rds show but just get black or white backgrounds.

brntguy,
have you set the transparency of the exported BT file in Vegas?
if not, right click on the media select properties, select media and in Alpha channel select straight (unmatted)

yea i did that but it had no change. I don't think I'm saving the avi correct because when I tried to import it back into blufftlitler it had an error in using it in the video layer. I dont get it?

Um, I save the movie with 'Uncompressed AVI with Transparency' then edit the media properties in Vegas.

I use those options too. I must be missing something. Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

If it would help, I could create a 1 or 2 second uncompressed BT movie ( should keep it down to 20 megs or so) together with a Vegas 10 Pro file (.veg) for you to test.

This picture might help

It would be fantastic if we could get a timeline like that in BluffTitler.

Aha, I think people new to rendering with transparency are getting confused as some of the lower third shows already have a background image. To render with transparency you need a Black background. This is the Alpha channel and is removed in exporting with the Transparency box checked.
Hope this helps.

Indeed, a fullscreen background picture is enough to remove all transparency.

It's not about colour. A red background is as transparent as a black one. But only if this colour is created with the LIGHT COLOUR property of the ambient light layer.

If this colour is created by a (fully black or red) picture, again this picture removes all transparency.
