Yes, I think the particle layer can be used to create fireflies:
outerspace-software.com...
Maybe the BrightDots1 preset is a good starting point.
Use the PARTICLE SIZE prop to make them a bit smaller.
The TURBULANCE prop can be used to make them fly more randomly, as if they have a mind of their own.
