Is there a way to export a show as 3D objects for use in After Effects? For example, could I "model" some 3D text in BT then export it for use in a AE project and preserve relative placement in 3D space?

Not in the current version. Which file format would you like to have?

Thank you for your feature request!

To be honest I don't know which sort of file I would need. I just ordered AE CS5 and it won't arrive for a week or so. In the mean time I've been watching some tutorials. Seeing that AE does not generate any 3D models or text (at least I don't think it does), my first thought was BT. Do you know which file types are standard input sources for AE?

After further reading I discover that you can import 3D models into After Effects if they are contained in a 3D object layer in a PSD file. There is some info on that in the LINK. Not sure if there is a way for BT to mimic this file format without Photoshop?

Thank you for the link. According to this file Photoshop can read the following 5 formats:

.3ds
.dae
.kmz
.obj
.u3d

OBJ was mentioned as another popular format. Nut I don't get why the files need to be imported into Photoshop before they're usable in After Effects. Could one simply develop an export format that uses the PSD extension and contains whatever 3D data after effects wants to see?

BluffTitler format works with models (x.)
BluffTitler texts produced in 3D, you can only export in avi or sequence of images (png, bmp)
but this would not help to work effectively in affter effect.
affter effect models using the formats that you described to work with trackeos.
if I'm right affter effect also works with texts in 3D, made by the same program (affter effect)
I clear that I have two programs with different functions
affter effect is more complex, but brings many types of tools.
BluffTitler is much less complex but even brings fewer tools, have results that have nothing to envy affter effect.

An Adobe rep just talked with the Photoshop product manager, and he said that it is technically and legally possible to create PSD files outside of Photoshop. The PSD specification is, I believe, included with the Photoshop SDK. He wasn't sure how much 3d object layer support is in the current Photoshop SDK, though. So, I think that this is a question for the Photoshop SDK folks.

Maitegras, I do not own After Effects yet but after I reviewed some of the new tracking and other features in CS5, I decided to buy it. AE canNOT create its own 3D titles. You can do so in Photoshop CS5 Extended and import to AE. But for now Bluff is still the go to app for creating 3D titles. Now if we can export to a PSD file that AE will accept including camera data...that would be sick.

JimH, do you see any workflow advantages to using Photoshop Extended and AE with BT? I'm thinking of getting CS5, but will still need BT in my video production projects as they need quick turnaround.

Elect1, For creating quick real 3D titles there is no advantage to using Photoshop and AE as neither can generate and animate 3D objects in 3D space. However, Bluff isn't a photo editor nor is it the compositor AE is. So you have to look to the strengths of each program including your NLE because they overlap so much. I expect AE CS5 to arrive this week and have yet to confirm in my own mind what the best workflow will end up being... I've asked that very question in the Sony Vegas forum.
