What exactly are presets and when do we use them?

A preset is a single key of a single layer.

Choose LAYER > Add layer > Add plasma layer... and you'll see the select preset dialog.

Adjust one and save it by choosing PRESET > Save preset as...

Next time you add a plasma layer, you'll see your own preset in the dialog!

So it only works on Plasma layers then?

It works on all layers.

Choose LAYER > Add layer > Add particle layer... and you'll see the very same dialog, only with particle presets.

Presets also understand hierarchy. Choose LAYER > Attach layer > Attach border to active layer... and the dialog only displays child text presets.

That's pretty useful. Thanks for explaining it.
So if ever I create a look i can store that effect as a preset, great.
