I think the Likes (👍) and comments are important, not to flatter the ego but primarily as an indicator of the community activity.

Flattering the ego is always nice, but they also have a very practical purpose. Views, likes and comments increase the visibility in search results and recommendations. So this helps finding new users! And new users give us the means to improve the app!
