I try to make the connect line 1-6 to an Extension Hook Spring. So when the spacing is say 20 we can make the letters spring back.
The Hook spring has to extract and...get back in the original state
Maybe the 2nd slider of the LINES property of the sketch layer can do what you want. When this value is 6, it connects the right side of the previous character to the left side of the next character. It's one of those cryptic properties that really needs a user guide. So press <F1> to find out what it does.
Only thing left to do is to keyframe the SPACING prop of the text layer.
And to connect a sketch layer to a text layer:
-make the text layer the active layer
-click on the ADD SKETCH LAYER... button
-answer YES in the dialog that follows
