Version 220.127.116.11, launched today, introduces the Picture\ExtrudePicture effect.
It can be used to extrude a picture layer: make it 3D. The effect does not trace the picture into a vector drawing, but simply renders the picture multiple times as a stack of slices. As you can see in the screenshot, this works magically well!
Drawback is that correct lighting of the sides is impossible and the result looks bad when watched perpendicular to the sides.
Next to the picture layer, the effect also works great with a text layer using a bitmap font. The screenshot uses the Playbox font by Matt Lyon:
