Here's an experimental vertical fog effect, as requested by LostBoyz:
outerspace-software.com...
In contrast to the standard fog as set with the fog properties of the camera layer, this fog does not depend on the distance to the camera, but on the vertical world position.
Apply it to the camera layer and play with the FX props:
outerspace-software.com...
In this example it is used to add a low hanging fog, making the streets disappear in the fog. The model used can be downloaded here:
sketchfab.com...
UPDATE: the effect has been removed from this article. It now comes with the installer of version 16.5.0.7. It can be found in the Effects/Camera folder: outerspace-software.com...
In this example, the upper floors of the buildings disappear in the fog. This can be done by setting the FX VERTICAL FOG INTENSITIES prop to (0, 1).
Notice that, in contrast to the standard fog, the lower floors in the distance are not affected by the fog.

The effect accepts a texture in the 2nd texture slot. When it is provided, it is used a a horizontal gradient that is applied vertically on the fog range.
Not sure if this is a useful feature. Maybe it's more effective on abstract models with funky gradients.

Great effect,
I simulated dark skyscrapers with the sun illuminating only the top.
(I can't post the correct resolution here, but trust me it's beautiful)

Thank you all!
LostBoyz, great looking screenshots. Would love to see it in action!
LostBoyz, it's a post processing effect so it does not know anything about layers.
Franco, beautiful atmospheric effect!

Jolosan64, the fog can be made white by setting the FX VERTICAL FOG COLOUR property of the CameraVerticalFog effect to (255, 255, 255).
